Cano Cristales is a river located in northern part of Colombia, in “Sierra de la Macarena”. A unique biological wonder, Caño Cristales has been referred as the "river of five colors," "the river that ran away from paradise," and "the world's most beautiful river " due to the algae produced colors like red, yellow, green, blue and black at the bottom of the river giving it a unique appearance. The river is less than 100 km long and 20m wide.
Color of the river depends on the season and the amount of water. During Colombia's wet season, when the water flows too fast and deep, a unique species of plant that lines the river floor called Macarenia clavigera turns a brilliant red. when the water is enough to let the sun reach the mosses and algae, the nature “blossoms”. But for a few weeks from September through November, the river transforms into a veritable living rainbow.
